There is something magical about happy poems that really touch our hearts. The way poems rhyme they almost seem to exist between words and music. Music passes the logical level of thinking, and I think poems at their best can do that too. Their message goes straight through to your emotions.
As a child I had many happy poems, most of which were, of course children’s rhymes. We sang those rhymes outside when we played with the kids in the neighborhood.
Then, when I was a bit older, I found other poems. The poems in the Lord of the Rings especially touched my heart. I could recite them word for word. I remember sitting on a pier, under the August stars, when the whole world was asleep, whispering the magical words of Sam Gamgee when all seemed to be lost on their quest to destroy the One Ring. I still remember this poem word for word...
"In western lands beneath the Sun the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair.
Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the day is done nor bid the stars farewell."
- J.R.R. Tolkien / The Lord of the Rings / Return of the King
The poem still makes me shiver… It tells of such hope and trust in happiness yet to come. There have been moments in my life when everything was dark and heavy, and then suddenly this poem rose to my mind. Many a times I have said it, aloud or quietly in my mind, and every time it has awaken in me a feeling of hope.
Then, when I had already was an adult, the poems did not need to rhyme anymore. To my great surprise I found a real poet in our family in my mother’s side.
There are surely many of you who love poems. Are there any special poems that make you feel happy? Poems that gave you hope when you most needed it? Poems that expressed your love so well you still remember them by heart? Poems that gave you hope in hard times? Or poems that you yourself wrote?
Please share those special poems with us. Write them using the form at the end of the page, and let others comment on the page you create. And do remember to give credit to the poet – if there is a link existing to the poet’s website, add that too.
