In our office the refridgerator used to be full of old food. Then we put a sign on the door saying "Whatever is in here is thrown to garbage on Friday evening". And the cleaning lady was given the instructions to do so, and then wipe the fridge clean. Everyone was notified also by email.
After this - no more problems with old food.

We used to have dirty coffee cups all over our office (we are a small telesales company). I think messy environment eats away your work motivation too so I decided to do something about it.
I went online, and found a webstore where I can make my own coffee mugs. I ordered mugs for everyone in the office (only a few dollars each) - and had the name of each emplyee written on their own mug. Once the mugs arrived, I threw away the old ones and now we only have named mugs. So if anyone leaves their dirty coffee mug around, we know immediately who it is.
Needless to say this ended the dirty mug -circus.
Now I have to figure out how to do the same with the dishes...

If an office has a messy kitchen, why not make everyone responsible for cleaning it?
Put a list on the wall, where everyone's name is. And each person in turn has to clean the kitchen. Everyone can see whose turn it is today by looking at the list. And if the kitchen is messy, then you know who is responsible.
I bet the messiest people will be the loudest to object to this... But maybe people start keeping an eye on their coworkers. And if they see someone making a mess, they will open their mouths and stop it from happening in the first place.
